Student Accom in London, UK (6 people)
Initial Investigation: The Kitchen
The project began by focusing on the kitchen as a social, frequently used space, where everyday objects often move into dining or living areas. From there, the idea to design a kitchen roll holder came from looking closely at how different people actually use their kitchens.
Research involved analysing a range of living situations across the UK, USA, and India. The sample shared photos of their kitchens: used to identify patterns and potential opportunities.

Breakdown of Kitchen Roll Holders Within Sample
Everyone used kitchen roll, but fewer than half had a dedicated holder, leaving rolls exposed to spills or dirt.
The purchased holders were minimal, stripped to the function of Pole + Base - some had a design attempt but still rather ordinary and lacking visual interest.

Kitchen Roll, No Kitchen Roll Holder

Kitchen Roll & Kitchen Roll Holder

Ideation
Brief: “Make a Product for a Gift Shop.”
Social environments
feel like the right context.
What if the object works across both spaces?
Analyse habits, small details from photos of real kitchens.
Kitchen roll holders = missing + looks crazy bland
Across cultures and lifestyles - kitchen rolls everywhere.
This audience loves personality and play.
Playful - Right, let’s take that literal
Kitchens and living rooms = social hotspot rooms
